The composer, Daniel Protheroe wrote several anthems for male voice choir toward the end of the nineteenth century. This (written when he was 21 in around 1887) is his first, strident, contribution to the canon - Milwyr y Groes (The Crusaders) - which features a tenor solo for a short passage in the middle.

Having been out of print for decades until this new edition, it was described by Emrys Cleaver as "one of the greatest pieces for male voice choirs [...] If Emlyn Evans's comment that music attains immortality if it is still poular after 40 years, then surely Milwyr y Groes will be here forever."
